Aurifil threads - Why Are They So Popular??

For the past several years I have been sewing with Gutermann threads loyally.  Lately I have been seeing Aurifil threads mentioned all across the quilting/sewing blogosphere.  I have yet to sew with Aurifil thread.  Can yall chime in and tell me what the scoop is about why Aurifil thread is so popular?

  1. Happy to chime in on Aurifil, changed to Aurifil thread a couple of months ago because of the thread quality when piecing and quilting and also the choice of colours and price is great for what you get. :)

  2. I have tried the other thread for piercing but if compare to Aurifil, i loved Aurifil Mako Cotton Thread the best! Because it is ideal for piecing and quilting. Great choice!

  3. I am a frugal quilter, using my Joanne's coupons buying the gutterman thread for years and it was ok. I do alot of landscapes with fusibles and other embellishments and heavy quilting, thread painting and had alot of thread breakage, snags, tension issues ect. A friend who loves aurifill convinced me to try some and I couldn't believe the difference! It quilts like having the needle go thru butter, smooth and has made the quilting process so much better. Believe me, for me to fork out 9 bucks for a spool of thread it must be worth it and it is, every penny. I don't swear while quilting anymore:)

  5. I bought a spool of Aurifil thread at a quilt show some years ago. It just behaves, no issues at all. Wasn't able to source anymore for ages and resorted to trying other reputable brands. NOTHING else compares. Am so happy now as I've found a source in UK of all colours and sizes and weights. Oh joy!!!

  6. Started using Aurifil several years ago when I bought my longarm sewing machine. Aurifil is an exquisite thread. Quilting with Aurifil is like quilting with a fine silk thread. I use 50 wt for quilting and piecing. And for piecing, it is the best. The weight and silkiness of the thread make it perfect.

  7. I love Aurifil threads I use it for hand piecing ,machine quilting and piecing, appliqué and embroidery.it doesn't knot no lint and comes in a great range of colors and thread weights and sews like butter. I use 50wt for appliqué and hand piecing, 40 wt for seams. Love their 12wt cotton for embroidery comes on reel and you don't need to split threads like DMC. Have even tried the wool also for wool appliqué. I love the variety of colors plain and varigated that's available in all thread weights. Once you use Aurifil you'll wonder why it took you so long. I don't work for them but love their thread.

  9. It is an amazing thread. The owner of the company is honest about the product and is always wanting to make it the best on the market. It lasts forever so it is a good value and the color choices are amazing. Finally, I have a machine that has been very picky about threads and she has decided that she only likes Aurifil :o)

I hope you have an opportunity to try this thread, I know I am hooked!

  10. I have to say that aurifil 50wt is my favourite thread for hand and machine piecing. It is smooth, silky and thin but also very strong, meaning that my seams lay flatter and over a block there is less 'loss' to the pressing. I recommend you try it.

  11. Aurifil thread is THE BEST! It is very smooth, lays flat, and I have absolutely no breakage when using it. My Pfaff is "happy" with it, too! It just works! Once you buy Aurifil, you will never buy anything else! I know I won't!

  13. I love Aurifil because it is strong and smooth and yet so fine. The seams are so flat and there is little lint. Once I tried it I didn't go back!

Hey Jennifer, thanks for the headsup about the giveaway. I just entered but hit DID IT before I entered my comment, oops. I'm not used to that form of giveaway entry system. Aurifil corp emailed me back asking for my address so they can send me some threads. I'm stoked!

Hey Sonya, I'm reading great things about Aurifil. I wonder why every quilting/sewing store doesn't carry them? Some threads are coming my way from the company to try.

  18. Aurifil threads are fine enough for detailed mega-quilting, but strong enough for piecing. It seems expensive at first, but each spool lasts at least a couple of months, even when quilting and sewing every single day. You'll think that Gutermann or other threads are SO thick and heavy once you use Aurifil all the time.

  26. This might sounds funny, but the best way to learn about threads is to go to Superior Thread's website. They'll explain about long-staple egyptian cotton, and how cheap threads use shorter fibers, and better threads use longer fibers, thus creating less lint, breakage, etc. My two favorite threads are Aurifil and Superior - I use them both exclusively - I rarely have lint, I rarely have threads break, and I rarely have to clean out my machine. Using cheap thread is like putting cheap oil or gas into your car - it'll wear out your machine faster and you won't get the results you want from it.

Piecing with Aurifil or Superior is a dream - because they're low-lint threads, you can get 50-100% more on your bobbins, so you don't have to stop and refill the bobbin as often. I have found that my seams lay more flat when I use Aurifil vs. cheaper threads - and that can make a huge difference in a block with a lot of piecing - it makes my sewing much more accurate.

Also - you might pay more for the spool, but yard-for-yard, you'll get much much more for your money.

I swear - if you use a spool of Aurifil, you'll never go back. It's harder to find, but SO worth it!

  27. I just completed a flannel baby quilt with 50w Aurifil and it sewed together like an absolute dream. The owner of my quilt shop hadn't heard about it, but once she tried it, she bought it for her shop - yeah!

  28. I'm with you, I keep hearing how wonderful it is. Since I would need to buy it online and can't really trust the colors I see, I haven't tried it. Maybe I should invest in some off white after reading all of these comments.
