Introducing my Quilt Block of the Month with a TWIST series!

QUILT BLOCK OF THE MONTH WITH A TWIST! -
starting February 2013 (to give everyone time to recoup from the Holidays)

You'll be able to grab my buttons soon!
I will create them in 3 sizes (150x150, 200x200, 250x250)

Okay, several blogs out there do Quilt Block of the Month series.  I wanted to do the same but with an added TWIST that I learned about when I was in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia this last Spring of 2012.  The Dhahran Oasis Quilt Guild there does a Quilt Block of the Month for it's members and their added TWIST is that they pre-make fabric & instruction packets for participants, members sign up if they want to participate that month & make the 12" block then turn it back in to the guild.  When all of the blocks have been collected there is a drawing and one lucky member gets to keep all the blocks that month to make a quilt or whatever she wanted!  That is what I want to do on my blog.  This will be a great way for newbies & veteran quilters to learn new techniques & styles.  EVEN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO PARTICIPATE WITH THE PACKETS, YOU CAN STILL FOLLOW ALONG ON MY BLOG & MAKE THE BLOCK AT HOME WITH YOUR OWN FABRIC.

ABOUT THE FABRIC IN THE PACKETS
The fabric pieces in the quild packets were precut slightly larger than the size needed for piecing (I.E. you need a 4" square for piecing, you would get a 5" square in your packet).  This is so that you have enough extra to trim off/square up while piecing.  I plan to follow this same system to decrease waste.  Designer quilt quality fabric will be used.

WHERE THE QUILT BLOCKS WILL COME FROM
If all goes well for 2013, I plan to continue this style of Block of the Month series into 2014 & beyond.  The book I will be using is 501 Rotary Cut Quilt Blocks by Judy Hopkins.  I purchased my PDF copy at Martingale for $19.95 (they have the actual book you can buy as well) OR you can find it in book stores online & in your area.  PLUS, I may be using any fun quilt blocks I find online that can be made with a rotary cutter.  I will include cutting/piecing instructions on my blog & in the packets for a 12" finished block.

FEES & DEADLINE DATES EACH MONTH
Now of course there is a fee involved.  To cover designer fabric, printed instructions, shipping/handling & PayPal transaction fees for each US participant I am thinking $7 should be enough.  If there are any Canadian participants, that price will increase slightly (have to figure that up).  After the first month I will be able to tell if that price can go down.  Each participant will be responsible for shipping the finished block back to me.  The schedule I am thinking of following is:
  • Participants pay fee by 1st of the month
  • Packets shipped to participants on/by the 7th
  • Participants ship the finished block back to me no later than the 21st
  • Once I receive all blocks I will choose a winner and ship them out

WHICH QUILT BLOCKS WE WILL MAKE
I am in the process of looking through the book to see which blocks I want to do for 2013.  I would like to do blocks that haven't been done in other Block of the Month series or ones I've hardly seen at all.  I'll keep in mind that they need to be easy enough for beginners as well.

  4. I'm interested, but debating whether I can make a commitment to get a block back to you every month. If I can't, it isn't fair to sign up.

  5. I'm like the above I'm interested, but debating whether I can make a commitment to get a block back to you each month. I guess we'll see when February 1st comes around and you want money. All I can do is try.
